Sedo Domain Market, Amps Security

Fort Lauderdale, Florida
- (Cheap Web Hosting Directory) – April 27, 2007 – Domain name marketplace, Sedo, has concluded its agreement with distributed denial of service (DDoS) mitigation company, Prolexic Technologies.

Prolexic has tailored a service to provide DDoS mitigation for all of Sedo’s three million-plus parked domain names. Utilizing a custom interface, Sedo can view attack traffic directed at the network and determine which domain is being targeted. In case of attack, Sedo can route its traffic through Prolexic’s mitigation infrastructure within minutes.

The decision to adopt protective measures was prompted by an attack in February on a domain name parked on Sedo’s servers. This attack followed a rash of DDoS attacks, which have in the past year caused problems for many domain-parking companies. Due to the extremely large volume of domain names parked on their servers, domain-parking companies are particularly susceptible to denial of service attacks.

Matt Bentley, Chief Strategy Officer at Sedo remarked, ”We have experienced the effects of DDoS when our members have been attacked, even though Sedo itself has not been a direct target. Since maintaining 100 percent uptime for our customers is a top priority for us, we are pleased that Prolexic can provide a clear insight into malicious traffic, as well as a back-up system that we can switch over to if necessary. With Prolexic on board we are sure to prevent the re-occurrence of such attacks in the future.”

Paul Sop, CTO of Prolexic added, ”Attackers are smart and their strategies are constantly changing, so our 24/7 team of security experts reacts and mitigates these new attack types as they happen. That’s one of the biggest differences between off-the-shelf solutions and the level of DDoS protection Prolexic provides. A service can offer a tailored solution that specifically responds to the needs of the customer, react to each type of attack and enable the affected organization to continue to do business.”

Prolexic Technologies provides solutions designed to protect Internet operations from the debilitating service disruptions caused by DDoS attacks. Prolexic’s patent-pending Clean Pipe Virtual Transport network offers solutions to keep Internet-facing infrastructures free of DDoS traffic, without making major adjustments or multimillion-dollar investments.

Sedo, (acronym for ”Search Engine for Domain Offers”), is an online marketplace for buying and selling domain names and websites. Sedo began in 2001, as a student project among three friends: Tim Schumacher, Ulrich Priesner, and Marius Würzner. The trio distributed computer games through the website offensiv.de. After the business was phased out, the students considered selling it, which laid the foundation for Sedo: ”search engine for domain offers.” Headquartered in Cambridge, Mass., Sedo has assembled what it believes is the world’s largest database of domain names for sale, with more than four million listings. Buyers and sellers are brought together through a searchable online marketplace, and conduct negotiations anonymously using an offer-counteroffer system. To facilitate successful transactions, Sedo has introduced a range of related services, including domain name escrow/transfer services, domain name appraisals, a domain brokerage service and paid domain name parking. Sedo’s model has attracted a global membership base of more than 355,000 domain professionals, and more than 7 million listings. Sedo offers regional versions of its site for the UK (Sedo.co.uk), France (Sedo.fr), Germany (Sedo.de), and Spain (eSedo.com).
