iPhone Applications Downloads Exceed 500 Million

How are you liking your iPhone?  Enjoying the hand-eye challenge of a riveting game of Super Monkey Ball?  How about the iFart mobile?  If you answered in the affirmative, you’re just one of a bajillion iPhone users who have made Apple’s iPhone App Store a blockbuster success – to the tune of over 500 million downloads.

That averages out to about 1.63 iPhone applications for every person living in the United States.  Each Application ranges from “free” to several dollars.  I think we can call that a success.

Needless to say, Apple is pleased with this development, as it not only says something about the long-term viability of its iPhone brand, but about how Apple users are ready and willing to fork over some cash to play Monkey Ball.  And not only is the App store a smashing success, but it seems to be growing even more popular.  Via CNET:

Apple announced Friday that over 500 million apps have been downloaded from its App Store. Amazingly, the company only reached 300 million downloads on December 5, meaning its App Store has enjoyed accelerating growth since the holiday season. The announcement, which was made in the form of an advertisement on Apple’s home page, also claims that the App Store now features more than 15,000 apps.

What’s to blame/credit for the growth?  Well, the holiday season, of course, but that’s just part of it:  research currently indicates that more and more adults are starting to use social networks like Facebook and MySpace, which means there is an increasing audience for these little nuggets.

Since there are so many adults around, that bodes well for the continued increase of gadgets like the iPhone and networking tools in general.  In fact, the relatively lower amount of adults who use social networks actually still outnumber the larger percentage of teens who use them:

That said, from a percentage perspective, there are still more teens using individual networks. According to the report, 65 percent of teens in the United States are using social networks, compared with just 35 percent of all the adults. But because there are more adults than teens in the country, the younger crowd is still outnumbered.

For an example of how much growth potential for these little apps still exists, consider that only about 6 percent of U.S. adults are on LinkedIn, a popular social networking site for professionals.  And as Applications become more profitable for Apple, the future could see lower upfront costs for the iPhone itself, making it more affordable and hence more available to a larger audience.

Apple now has over 15,000 downloadable applications available.
